The Lagos State Government is actively considering the adoption of biofuel in its public transport operations to combat carbon emissions associated with public transportation.
This initiative was disclosed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority through an official statement on its Twitter handle on Thursday.
According to LAMATA, they have “joined the global fight against emission from public transportation by exploring the use of biofuel in transport operation to promote sustainable transportation.”
To facilitate this transition to an alternative fuel source, the Lagos State Government announced that Swedfund, the development finance institution of Sweden, will provide essential support.
LAMATA further revealed that Swedfund has partnered with CPCS Transcom Limited and Nexant Consulting Limited.
Together, they will conduct a series of critical studies to assess the feasibility and impact of using alternate fuels for the Lagos Public Transportation system.
The Lagos State Government expressed confidence in embracing biofuel for public transport operations stating “this bold initiative aims to replace traditional, polluting fossil fuels with cleaner options, paving the way for a healthier and more sustainable future for Lagos residents.”
Biofuel is a liquid fuel produced from renewable biological sources, including plants and algae, and offers a solution to one of the challenges of solar, wind, and other alternative energy sources.
