Kidnappers abduct funeral-goers in Enugu, demand N5m ransom per victim
The kidnappers of a group of people returning from a burial in Enugu State have demanded N5m as ransom for each of their captives.
WuzupNigeria gathered that the abductors, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, had waylaid the group on Friday evening along Nike-Ugwogo-Nsukka road while they were returning from a burial of a friend in Nsukka.
The victims, who were said to be travelling in a Toyota Sienna bus, were commanded to alight from the vehicle and ordered to a bush path, leaving their car behind.
However, it was further gathered that the kidnappers contacted the family of one of their victims, Mr Ukwu Anayo Ernest, a trader in one of the markets in the state capital, at the weekend and demanded N5m as ransom.
A relative of one of the victims further confirmed that the kidnappers had called their family, demanding N5m for their son’s release.
“On Friday, my husband went for burial at Nsukka and on his way coming back, gunmen attacked his car and kidnapped him,” Ukwu’s wife, Ogechukwu, told our correspondent.
“Today is the 5th day my husband was kidnapped. They (kidnappers) called on Saturday and Sunday, asking us to bring N5 million for his release which we don’t have. We are begging them that we don’t have that kind of money.
“I am begging the government of Enugu state to help us and secure the freedom of my husband.”
