The Federal High Court in Kaduna handed down a five-year prison sentence to Yusuf Garba and Dauda Musa for trafficking illicit drugs on Thursday.
Justice Mohammed Garba pronounced the sentence after the defendants, Yusuf Garba and Dauda Musa, pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Despite the jail term, the defendants were offered an alternative of paying a N500,000 fine each.
Reviewing the case’s details, NDLEA’s counsel, T. J. Atserhegh, informed the court that the convicts were apprehended at Rigachikun, Kaduna, while transporting 60kg of cannabis sativa. The offence, according to Atserhegh, violated Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30 Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
Atserhegh presented the certificate of analysis of the drug, the drug analysis report, defendants’ statements, and cannabis as exhibits before the court.
Having considered the prosecution’s evidence, Garba convicted the defendants as charged.
