(JUST IN) Delta: Medical doctor abducted, regains freedom

The kidnapped Principal Medical Officer at Ojobo General Hospital in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, Dr Wisdom Iboyitete, has regained freedom.

Newsmen learnt that the Medical Doctor was released by his abductors in the early hours of Sunday ahead of Monday when the Nigeria Medical Association in Delta State threatened to go on full-blown strike in protest of the abduction of their member.

Dr Iboyitete was kidnapped between late last Sunday night and the early hours of Monday by arms-wielding gunmen at the hospital premises. He has forcefully whisked away to an unknown destination through the creeks in the community.

The Delta State National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) had since declared an indefinite strike to protest the abduction of the doctor while their counterpart, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) had directed its members in the state to down tools if the victim was not released before Monday, June 8, 2020.

However, the State Secretary of NAGGMDP, Dr Ikechukwu Okoh, confirmed the released of the doctor to newsmen on Sunday.

He said the victim had just been released when contacted on Sunday to the delight of health workers and men of goodwill in the state.

Dr Okoh, who could not immediately give details of the release, promised to avail our correspondent with further information later.

The kidnappers had demanded for N5m ransom but it could not be ascertained whether the ransom was paid before Dr Iboyitete was released on Sunday.
