The tenth seeded player, Wilson Igbinovia, says his target was to win the third edition of the ongoing VEMP National Open Tennis Championships holding in Abuja.
In the match played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Wednesday, Igbinovia defeated Abayomi, the number nine seed, 6-4, 5-0, who retired in the second round of the qualifiers match.
The win meant that Igbinovia has qualified for the quarter finals on Thursday.
He told reporters that he would continue to remain focused, to achieve his target in his subsequent matches.
“I will continue to stay focused because it’s a season of players, last week I was at Kano for the Dala Hard Court Tennis Tournament, where I lost to Imeh Joseph in the finals. I’m here to play the final match and lift up the trophy, “he said.
In the other matches played, Joseph Imeh beat Usman Kushima 7-6 (4) , 6-3, Oparaoji Uche beat Adehi Oche 6-4, 6-3 while Iloputa Ikechukwu beat Emmanuel Jebutu 6-3 6-3.
All the winners of today’s event, in both the male and female categories, would play in the quarter finals on Thursday.
The third edition VEMP National Open Tennis Championship, which started on November 4, would end on Saturday, November 13 in Abuja.
