Published

The Kwara State Upper Area Court sitting in Ilorin will today decide the case of two traditional religion devotees, Abdulazeez Adegbola aka Tani Olohun and Chief Ademola Olawoore, Oluwo of Tede, who are standing trial for alleged defamation.

The two men are accused of defaming Alfa Tonile Okutagidi and conspiring to disturb the peace in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.

Their lawyers, led by M.P. Gegele, have argued that it is improper for the accused to be tried for the same offense in two different courts.

They pointed out that the men have already been charged with defamation in a Magistrate Court and that it is against the law to charge them with the same offense in a different court within the same jurisdiction.

Alfa Okutagidi’s lawyer, Mr. US Umar, has countered that the two cases are not the same because the people who brought the allegations are different.

He said that Tani Olohun was the only defendant in the case before the Magistrate Court, but that he and Oluwo are both defendants in the case before the Upper Area Court.
