Russia has promised to support Nigeria with military help as the country continues to face growing security problems.

The Russian Minister of Defence, Mr. Andrey Belousov, made this known when Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, visited him in Moscow.

Belousov said Russia was ready to assist the Nigerian Armed Forces as part of their existing military and technical relationship.

According to a statement from the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the type and level of assistance will be decided after further meetings between both countries, including talks with Nigeria’s Armed Forces.

Gusau explained that General Musa was in Russia to show support for the country during its 80th Victory Day, a day set aside to honour Russian soldiers who died in World War II.

“The visit was highly rewarding,” Gusau said. “It allowed the CDS to restate Nigeria’s commitment to working with Russia on defence matters.”

He added, “It also gave him a chance to explain what the Nigerian military needs most right now — and how Russia might help.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force has begun aerial rehearsals in Abuja and Lagos ahead of its 61st anniversary celebration on May 23, 2025.

In a statement signed by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Air Force said residents of both cities should not panic during the practice flights. He assured that the exercises are safe and carefully planned.

“These aerial manoeuvres are to make the grand finale colourful and to show the skills and strength of the Nigerian Air Force,” Ejodame said.

He also thanked the public for their support and cooperation during the preparations.
