The National Population Commission has officially commenced full digital registration of births and deaths under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system across all 13 local government areas of Ebonyi State.
The NPC Federal Commissioner representing Ebonyi State, Jeremiah Nwankwegu, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Nwankwegu emphasised the critical need for a technology-driven system to ensure the accurate and prompt documentation of every birth and death in the state.
He noted that reliable civil registration was essential for generating vital statistics that guide public policy, equitable resource allocation, and national development planning.
According to the Commissioner, the E-CRVS initiative, which officially took effect on July 1, 2026, is now fully operational on the commission’s VitalReg platform.
“This is part of our collective effort to strengthen civil registration, enhance the generation of vital statistics, and ensure that every birth and death occurring in Ebonyi State is captured through a modern, digitally enabled system,” Nwankwegu stated.
He further explained that under the upgraded framework, change of name records via Deed Poll will now be directly integrated into the NPC’s main portal and social registry. This digital transition is designed to streamline processes following recent legal precedents regarding legal name changes.
Prospective applicants will be required to submit a valid affidavit, a newspaper publication, and a certified Deed Poll executed by a legal practitioner to complete their documentation.
In a related development, the commission officially flagged off activities to commemorate the 2026 World Population Day in Ebonyi State.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Realising the hopes and aspirations of young people, today and for the future,” Nwankwegu reminded stakeholders that a nation’s future is defined not merely by the size of its population, but by the opportunities created for its citizens.
“This year’s theme challenges us to evaluate whether our public policies and strategic investments are truly responding to the realities and aspirations of our young people,” he said.
The NPC chief commended the United Nations Population Fund and other development partners for their continued support in advancing Ebonyi State’s population and development agenda. He also called for the accelerated revision of the National Youth Policy, which is currently undergoing its final stakeholder review.
