INEC declares Tambuwal Sokoto governor-elect
The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Governor Aminu Tambuwal of the Peoples Democratic Party as Sokoto state governor-elect.
Announcing the final results of the election, the state Returning Officer, Prof. Fatimah Mukhtar, said Tambuwal polled a total score of 512,002 votes to beat Ahmad Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress who garnered 511,660.
Tambuwal won with a slim margin of 342 votes.
The Resident Electoral Officer, Prof. Sadiq Musa, had said the declaration of the winner was be based on simple majority.
Mukhtar said the number of registered voters was 1,887,767, while accredited voters were 1,083,413.
Total votes cast were 1,067,994 while the number of rejected votes was 31,662.
Declaring Tambuwal the winner of the polls, the returning officer said, ” I, Fatimah Muktar, hereby certify that I was the returning officer for Sokoto state governorship election held on 23rd of March, 2019.
“That the election was contested and the candidates received the following votes, that Aminu Tambuwal having satisfied the constitutional requirements, is hereby declared the winner of the election.”
The hall erupted with shout of ‘Allahu Akbar (God is great) as the PDP supporters roared in jubilation.
