I have five children from five women. I know I am under spell. These were the words a 32-year-old commercial driver who is on trial for allegedly battering his 18-month-old son in Osogbo, Osun State.

Adeyemo, who appeared before an Osun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo, allegedly beat the victim with sticks on several occasions and burnt his body with cigarettes, causing the boy bodily injury.

Police Prosecutor, Abiodun Fagboyinbo, told the court that on 24 May 2020 around 1:30pm at Okinni Area, assaulted the victim “aged one year and six months by beating him with stick and cigarette light to the extent he sustained injury all over his body.”

He added that the defendant exploited the victim, the act prejudicial to the welfare of the child.

The offences committed were said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 33(1)(2) of the Child Rights Law of Osun State Nigeria, as well as Section 355 of the Criminal Code Cap 34, Vol. II. Laws of Osun State Nigeria 2002.

The defendant, who had no legal representation in court, however, pleaded not guilty to two-count of assault and exploitation pressed against him.

Answering questions from the court, Adeyemo said he was under a spell and mentioned his mother as the person behind his ordeal.

He said,

“I have five children from five women. I know I am under spell. I have consulted several pastors, who told me that my mother is responsible for my situation. I am a commercial driver.

“The son I assaulted with sticks is my son from my fourth wife. When his mother got pregnant, we got separated due to the insistence that she should not marry me.

“But we later settled our issues and we started living together only this year. Ever since we reunited, my son would not allow me to carry him. I hate him so much and on several occasion, I found myself beating the boy without mercy.”

In her ruling, Magistrate Modupe Awodele directed that Adeyemo should be remanded in Ilesha Correctional Center.
