Happy Golden Jubilee: Ajax, Betis, others celebrate Finidi George at 50

Former Super Eagles footballer, Finidi Geroge, has been widely celebrated on Twitter by friends, fans, and former clubs as he clocks 50 years of age today, April 15th, 2021.

The right-winger was part of Louis Van Gaal’s young history-making Ajax team, which won the league-cup double in the 1994/95 football season, their 25th Dutch title – without losing a single match all season and scoring 106 goals.

George was influential for the squad as they also won their fourth European Cup, defeating A.C. Milan 1-0 in the final. Ajax also won the Intercontinental Cup, defeating Gremio in the same season.

After 18 goals in 85 apps for Ajax, George who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria joined Real Betis, netting 38 goals before a stint with Mallorca as well.

His former sides, Ajax and Betis, as well as the Nigeria Football Federation and the world football governing body, FIFA, have joined a host of Nigerians to celebrate the Nigerian legend on his special day.

Real Betis said” With number 25… A player that made a whole generation fall in love with #RealBetis Happy birthday, Finidi George!”

Ajax also paid tributes to their legend, with a video message from some of the club’s legends, including Patrick Kluivert and Edwin Van Der Sar, which was captioned, Happy birthday to a legend from some legends.”

The NFF shared before and after photos of the ex-Eagle with the caption: “50 hearty cheers to former @NGSuperEagles forward, Finidi George. Thank you George for the memories and have a good one. Happy Golden Jubilee anniversary.”

Meanwhile, FIFA also uploaded a video of the former winger, reminding him of his goal against Argentina in the World Cup and an iconic celebration where he mimicked a urinating dog.
