Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially commissioned the Mushin Flyover, the fifth and final overpass constructed along the Red Line Rail corridor.
The inauguration took place on Saturday, with the Governor joined by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the State’s cabinet.
The project was executed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority.
The newly opened flyover is expected to alleviate traffic congestion for motorists and commuters traveling along Agege Motor Road from Onipanu.
It addresses the long-standing delays and traffic jams caused by the railway level crossing at the Ogunmokun axis. Additionally, the overpass eliminates the risk of accidents and collisions between trains and vehicles by removing pedestrian and vehicular interference on the rail tracks.
The Mushin Flyover follows the completion of four other bridges in Yaba, Oyingbo, Ikeja, and Agege, all part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s efforts to improve connectivity along the 37-kilometer Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line, which stretches from Agbado to Oyingbo.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the opening of the Mushin Flyover represents the fulfillment of his administration’s commitment to improving public transportation in Lagos. He noted that the infrastructure would significantly ease movement within the Mushin and Onipanu communities, creating new routes to Agege Motor Road, Post Office Road, and the Ogunmokun axis.
“The Mushin overpass is strategically important for ease of movement and connectivity within Mushin and Onipanu communities,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“This infrastructure has not only improved traffic flow but also added significant economic value to the area.
“With this new infrastructure, we have ensured minimal disruption on the Red Line corridor, keeping our promise to citizens and enhancing their quality of life.”
The Governor highlighted that the construction of the flyover brought benefits to the host communities, including job creation and opportunities for engineering students to gain practical experience. He also assured residents that the primary school, which was demolished to make way for the flyover, had been rebuilt in a nearby location.
Sanwo-Olu commended the residents of Mushin and Onipanu for their support during the project and urged them to take ownership of the infrastructure, protecting it from any form of vandalism.
LAMATA Managing Director, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, noted that the State Government had fully compensated property owners affected by the project. She also mentioned that the construction was handled by a local contractor, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to supporting local businesses.
