The Nigeria Customs Service has said that the smuggling of petrol out of the country persists despite the halt in fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu in May this year.
The acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed this in Abuja at an event organized by the service to mark the customs boss’s first 100 days in office.
Adeniyi said that the quality and price of petrol were the key factors causing the persistent smuggling.
He said the service had taken steps to reduce smuggling, including increasing border patrols and working with other security agencies to intercept smugglers.
However, he noted that the problem persisted, though it had reduced when compared to what was obtained in the past.
