The spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, has described the fatal shooting of a suspect by a police officer as difficult to explain, suggesting that spirituality may be a factor in understanding the incident.

Edafe made the remarks during a live television interview while addressing public outrage over a viral video showing a police officer fatally shooting a suspect in Delta State on April 26, 2026.

According to police accounts, operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command acted on intelligence from the public and intercepted the victim, Mene Ogidi, aged 28, who was attempting to send a parcel suspected to contain a firearm. Authorities said officers were deployed to take the suspect into custody, but the situation escalated when the team leader, Nuhu Usman, allegedly opened fire in violation of established police procedures.

“In my years as a public relations officer, this is one of the most difficult situations I have had to address. It is troubling when an incident occurs without a clear explanation,” Edafe said.

He added that while the police institution does not officially attribute such actions to supernatural causes, the nature of the incident leaves many questions unanswered.

“There is really no justification for what happened. We cannot say it is spiritual, but it is hard to understand the reasoning behind the officer’s actions,” Edafe stated.

The Delta State Police Command has since initiated disciplinary proceedings, confirming that the officer involved has been taken into custody and moved to Abuja for further investigation.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions across social media, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and stricter enforcement of police rules. The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its stance against unlawful killings, assuring the public that due process will be followed.
