Four die as car plunges into river in Ogun
Four passengers have been confirmed dead when a speeding commercial car plunged into Ososa river between Odogbolu and Ijebu-Ode along the Sagamu-Ore expressway.
It was gathered the commercial car marked GGE 596 DV with five passengers left Ijebu – Ode park on Tuesday morning but lost control and fell atop the Ososa dual carriage bridge.
Two passengers died on the spot when the accident impact threw them out of the car.
The car afterwards rolled into the river below with two other passengers.
It was learnt local divers recovered the two corpses from the river.
The passengers, The Nation was told, were going to Sagamu when the accident occurred.
Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident.
Akinbiyi, in a statement, informed remains of the deceased – three males and a female- have been deposited at the morgue of the State Hospital, Ijebu – Ode while the injured were also rescued to the same hospital for treatment.
While commiserating with the family of the deceased, the TRACE Spokesman advised drivers to exercise caution, avoid overcrowding of vehicles and excessive speed, especially during this rainy season.
Akinbiyi said:
“According to eye witness account, we learnt the Opel commercial car was coming from Ijebu-Ode inbound Sagamu when the accident happened.
“The witness account also confirmed that Opel car was on speed when it suddenly lost control and plunged into the Ososa River before Ijebu-Ode.
“In all, six occupants were in the vehicle including the driver, a female and five males, which is against the COVID 19 guidelines and protocols.
“The injured two have been taken to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital and the four dead victim’s deposited at the morgue of the same hospital.
“The Opel car, which plunged into the river with passengers, has been retrieved by divers and taken to the Motor Traffic Division, Odogbolu.”
