Fernando Santos sacked as Poland coach
After just eight months in the role, the Polish Football Federation has sacked Fernando Santos as their national coach.
The decision comes after the team’s recent poor form, which has seen them lose three of their last four matches in Euro 2024 qualifying. Poland is fourth in Group E, with just two wins from their opening six games.
The final straw for the PZPN came on Saturday when Poland suffered a 2-0 defeat to Albania, which leaves them with a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the tournament
Santos was appointed as Poland’s coach in January following the departure of Czeslaw Michniewicz. He had previously led Portugal to victory at Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League.
In a statement, the PZPN said: “The Polish Football Federation announces that Fernando Santos is no longer the national coach as of September 13, 2023.”
Santos is the second high-profile coach to be sacked in recent weeks following the departure of Hansi Flick from Germany.
