The FBI has arrested gangster, Nitish Kaushal, who was allegedly involved in crimes including murder, kidnapping and drug trafficking in the United States, just days after placing him on its list of most wanted criminals.

“Nitish Kaushal has been arrested in Vermont,” the FBI said in a post on X on Thursday.

Kaushal, an Indian national, was accused of carrying out violent activities on behalf of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria organised crime group.

According to the FBI, his alleged offences included kidnappings, assaults and other acts of violence linked to the criminal network.

The federal agency had added Kaushal to its most wanted list on Tuesday, launching a search for him over his alleged connection with a transnational criminal organisation involved in a range of serious offences.

The FBI said the group was allegedly involved in crimes such as murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking, extortion, weapons trafficking, money laundering and human smuggling.

According to the agency, the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Organised Crime Group originated in Punjab, India, and expanded its operations to the Central District of California and other locations.

A federal arrest warrant was issued against Kaushal by the US District Court for the Central District of California, Los Angeles, on June 25 after he was charged with conspiracy under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations (RICO) Act.

The arrest came after Operation Hard Ball, a coordinated international law enforcement operation targeting the Bhagwanpuria gang. The operation involved raids and enforcement actions across the United States, Canada and Europe, reflecting increased global efforts to dismantle transnational criminal groups with origins in India.
