Nigerian troops have killed at least 27 terrorists after foiling an attempted attack on Kukawa community in Borno State, according to the military.
According to The Guardian, troops of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, repelled the attack after insurgents moved against soldiers of the 101 Special Forces Battalion stationed in the area.
Troops repel Kukawa attack
The military said the attack began at about 10:50pm on August 28 when the terrorists attempted to overrun the troops’ position.
Soldiers responded with direct and indirect fire, forcing the attackers to retreat towards the Cross Kauwa axis.
Operation Hadin Kai said ground troops were subsequently supported by air assets, which tracked the fleeing fighters and struck their withdrawal routes.
The coordinated operation reportedly resulted in the deaths of 27 terrorists.
Military recovers weapons
Troops also recovered weapons and other equipment abandoned by the attackers during the operation.
The military said the response further weakened the terrorists’ fighting capability and prevented them from gaining access to Kukawa community.
Operation Hadin Kai added that troops remain on heightened alert across the area as security operations continue.
The military has intensified offensive operations in parts of Borno State as ISWAP and Boko Haram fighters continue attempting attacks on communities and military positions in the North-East.
