Delta: Midnight fire guts a two-storey hostel



A fire outbreak in the midnight has gutted a two-storey Post Graduate Hostel in Campus 3 of the Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka in Ethiope East council area of Delta state.

According to a source the fire started at about 1:04am destroying about 10 rooms before help finally arrived.

No casualties were recorded.

Details of what may have caused the fire were not clear as at the time of filing this report.

However, multiple sources within the university claimed that, “the incident was caused by an electrical mishap.

A student simply identified as Samson Aghogho, resident of the hostel quickly called for help when the fire started.

“The electricity of the hostel was put off immediately to avoid further damages. The fire service arrived shortly and with the combined efforts of both the students of the medical hostel, the executive hostel and some other able bodied men around put off the fire.

“Students’ properties were destroyed by the flames which was put out at about 3:40am by the varsity’s fire service”. Samson said.

The Vice Chancellor and other staff of the university including the Red Cross society were reported to have been on ground in a bid to manage any emergency.

When contacted for comments, the DELSU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eddy Agbure, confirmed the incident.

He said, “yes it’s true, it’s a colossal damage”.
