A traditionalist in Ogun State has died in hospital after allegedly setting himself ablaze. This has left his wives and other family members shocked by the tragedy.
According to The Punch, the women said they were not present when the incident occurred. They only learnt what had happened through neighbours who raised the alarm.
Speaking in Yoruba during an emotional interview, one of the wives described her husband as a kind man. She said the family never imagined that such an incident could happen.
She explained that nothing had prepared them for the news. The news was that he had allegedly poured a flammable substance on himself and set himself on fire.
Family learns of incident from neighbours
The women said they became aware of the incident after people in the neighbourhood informed them. By the time they received the news, their husband had already suffered serious burns and required urgent medical attention.
He was reportedly taken to hospital for treatment but later died from the injuries he sustained.
The wives expressed confusion over what could have led him to take such an action. They said they had no clear information about events immediately preceding the incident.
They also maintained that they were away when it happened. Therefore, they could not provide a first-hand account of how the fire started.
Traditionalist remembered as a kind man
The grieving women described the deceased as someone they knew to be peaceful and kind. They added that his death had left the household devastated.
One of them repeatedly questioned what could have pushed him to allegedly set himself ablaze. She said the circumstances remained difficult for the family to understand.
The incident has generated reactions online. Many people are expressing sympathy for the family and calling for a proper investigation into the events surrounding his death.
Authorities had yet to release an official statement confirming the cause of the incident. It was also unclear whether an investigation had begun at the time of the report.
