Court sentences two to death for rape, murder in Delta

Published

A Delta State High Court in Ibusa has handed down death sentences to two men, Mr. Ojerbo Solomon and Mr. Ola Babatunde, for armed robbery, rape, and murder.

The verdict was delivered by Justice M.O. Omovie after a trial that presented compelling evidence of their crimes.

State prosecutor Mr. E.H. Edema, supported by five witnesses, detailed the horrific events of February 8, 2016.

The court heard that Solomon and Babatunde, armed with guns, cutlasses, and knives, forcibly entered their victims’ home. During the robbery, the defendants sexually assaulted the occupants and then proceeded to slit their throats.

While one victim, Mr. Praise Sunday, survived the brutal attack, his mother and sister tragically lost their lives. The perpetrators fled the scene on the victim’s motorcycle to Ewohimi in Edo State, where they were later apprehended by law enforcement.

Throughout the trial, both defendants maintained their innocence but did not present any witnesses to support their claims.

In his ruling, Justice Omovie stated, “After carefully evaluating the evidence presented at the trial, I came to the conclusion that the prosecution had proved the case against the two defendants beyond reasonable doubt.”

Based on this conclusion, the court found Solomon and Babatunde guilty on all charges. Justice Omovie pronounced the sentence, condemning both men to death by hanging.
