Super Eagles star Christantus Uche has successfully undergone surgery in Lyon, France. This followed the serious knee injury he suffered while playing for Getafe against AS Monaco.
According to Getafe, the Nigerian international underwent the operation on Wednesday. This was part of his treatment for the injury sustained during the club’s pre-season encounter with Monaco on August 6.
The Spanish club said the procedure went according to plan. Uche now begins what is expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation programme.
Surgery completed successfully
Getafe confirmed that the operation was conducted successfully in Lyon under the supervision of the club’s medical personnel.
The procedure was overseen by Dr Christofer Oyola, head of Getafe’s medical department. It was also overseen by Álvaro García Zudaire, who is responsible for the club’s physiotherapy services.
“The intervention has been carried out normally and as planned,” the club said in its medical update.
Getafe added that it would provide the Nigerian with all the resources required to support his recovery.
Uche begins rehabilitation
Following the surgery, Uche has immediately moved into the rehabilitation phase of his recovery.
“From today, the footballer begins the rehabilitation process, in which he has the accompaniment and support of the club,” Getafe said.
The club added that it would remain closely involved throughout the process. It also expressed hope that his recovery would progress positively.
Getafe did not provide an official date for Uche’s return to action.
Monaco tackle caused serious injury
Uche sustained the injury during Getafe’s pre-season friendly against Monaco on August 6.
The Nigerian was caught by a heavy challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa during the closing stages of the encounter. He had to be taken off on a stretcher.
Initial fears surrounding the injury were later confirmed following medical examinations. These revealed serious damage to his right knee and the need for surgery.
Reports in Spain have indicated that the severity of the injury could keep the 23-year-old out for the 2026/27 season.
Getafe rallies behind Nigerian star
The setback came at a difficult time for Uche. He had returned to Getafe and was preparing for the new campaign.
The Spanish club has assured the Super Eagles player of its full backing during his recovery.
“From the club, we want to send all our encouragement and support to Christantus in this process, with the desire that his progress develops in the best possible way, as the entire Getafe family wishes,” the club said.
Uche will now focus on rehabilitation as he begins the long road towards returning to competitive football.
