The Confederation of African Football has annulled Edo Queens’ victory over Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the 2026 Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifying final. This follows a protest over the handling of the match.
According to The PUNCH, Ampem Darkoa challenged the decision to send the September 5 final directly to a penalty shootout. This action was taken after regulation time ended 2-2 in Ouagadougou.
Edo Queens won the shootout 4-1 and were initially declared WAFU-B champions. Therefore, they earned what appeared to be qualification for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.
However, CAF has now ruled that the match officials failed to follow competition regulations.
CAF orders extra time
Under Article 72.4 of the WAFU-B regulations, a final that remains level after 90 minutes must proceed to two 15-minute periods of extra time.
A penalty shootout should only take place if both teams remain level after the additional 30 minutes.
Because that procedure was not followed, CAF ruled that Edo Queens’ penalty victory cannot stand.
The final will instead resume from the 2-2 scoreline. Both teams are required to play the extra-time period that was initially omitted.
Champions League ticket back in play
If the match remains level after extra time, another penalty shootout will determine the winner.
The eventual champion will claim WAFU-B’s qualification ticket for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.
The ruling means Edo Queens must once again fight for a place in the continental tournament despite previously celebrating qualification.
Ampem Darkoa, meanwhile, have another opportunity to secure the regional title after successfully challenging the original match procedure.
A date for the completion of the final was not stated in the initial report.
