Homecoming: Chelsea reportedly agree £97.5m Lukaku deal with Inter

Lukaku arrives London

Romelu Lukaku looks set to make a return to Chelsea after the Premier League side reportedly reached a £97.5m agreement with Inter Milan to re-sign the Belgian striker.

UK Sun reports that the London club settled on the cash-only price for the striker after holding firm and refusing to cough up a further five million Euros – around £4.2m which would have taken the price to £101.7m.

An agreement around that region would have shattered the record £100m Manchester City splashed out on Jack Grealish last week.

Lukaku who was previously owned by the club between 2011 and 2014 has also agreed to a £200,000-a-week contract to make the switch back to Stamford Bridge for the second time in his career.

Confirming the news, Fabrizio Roman tweeted that “the agreement is set to be completed after further talks. €115m to Inter and no players included. Paperworks to be signed once details are fixed.

“Lukaku will sign a long-term contract for €12m + add ons.”

The Belgian left Chelsea in 2014 to join Everton for just £28m scoring 53 goals in 110 appearances for the Toffees before joining Jose Mourinho at Manchester United for a whooping £75 million, plus £15 million in add-on, in 2017.

After netting 28 goals in 66 matches at Old Trafford, the Belgian left for a fee reported to be a club record €80 million, claiming that he was made a scapegoat alongside other players such as Paul Pogba and Alexis Sánchez, in addition to the club’s failure to protect him against rumours about his future.

Lukaku however redefined himself at Inter with Antonio Conte as they won the 2020–21 Serie A for the first time since the 2009–10 season.

He finished the season 2020–21 with 24 league goals, 11 assists, making him the highest scorer on the title-winning team and the second highest scorer in the league, behind Ronaldo
