Breaking: Fire wreaks havoc in Ogba, destroys multimillion naira valuables

Published

Fire has destroyed multi-million naira worth of valuables at a building housing multiple shops on Shonola street in Aguda-Ogba area of Lagos on Saturday.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started from a hairdressing salon occupying one of the shops before extending to other parts of the building.

The building which is opposite the Excellence Hotel in Ogba was almost fully razed down before the arrival of firefighters.

Another eyewitness said

“The fire started from a hairdresser shop when one of the workers was trying to refuel a working generator. As she was fuelling the generator, the keg containing the fuel caught fire, instead of him to throw the keg away, out of fear she flung the keg still containing fuel into the shop, this was how the fire started and extended to other shops.”

According to the son of the landlord, Olawale Shonola, some of the shops on the building destroyed by the fire include electronics and electrical equipment shops, boutique, book shop, gas refilling shop, hairdressing salon, among others.

While making efforts to put out the fire, some men in the neighbourhood quickly supported shop owners in evacuating valuables from some of the shops, others were not so lucky before the fire destroyed all their goods.

One of the men in the area who assisted in putting off the fire said “we would have done a lot if there was enough water, but the fire wreck so much havoc because we couldn’t get access to enough water on time.

Our correspondent who was at the scene of the fire incident a while before the arrival of firefighters reports that efforts by volunteers in the neighbourhood to put out the fire was futile.

The fire had wreaked a lot of damage before the arrival of the men of the Lagos state fire service who were stuck in traffic along the Ijaye road some meters away from the scene of the incident.

With their arrival, the firefighters were able to stop the fire from extending to other buildings and complex surrounding the burning shops. They had to call for reinforcement when they were running out of water from the vehicle they brought. It took the arrival of three additional fire fighting trucks before the fire was put out.
