Boniface bags brace as Leverkusen keep heat on Bayern

Published

Bayer Leverkusen kept the heat on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich with a resounding 4-1 win over Heidenheim on Sunday.

Nigerian striker Victor Boniface continued his fine start to life in Germany, scoring his sixth league goal in as many outings in all competitions. He opened the scoring with a brilliant solo effort, collecting a pass from Exequiel Palacios and using his power and skill to beat Heidenheim defender Siersleben and drill a low shot past Kevin Müller.

Newly-promoted Heidenheim equalised through Eren Dinkci after the break, but Leverkusen restored their lead just five minutes later through another summer signing, Jonas Hofmann, who finished off a sublime pass from Palacios.

Boniface doubled his tally in the 74th minute from the penalty spot after Alex Grimaldo was adjudged to have been fouled in the box. Amine Adli put the gloss on the win with a deft lob over Heidenheim keeper Müller eight minutes from time.

Leverkusen have now won four of their first five league games and are emerging as the main challengers to Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title.
