Former Big Brother Naija housemate and entrepreneur, Uriel Oputa, has raised concerns over the increasing practice of couples making their private relationship conflicts public on social media.
Oputa expressed her views in a message shared via her Instagram Story, where she questioned the growing reliance on social media as a platform for resolving disagreements between partners.
The reality TV personality wondered when social media became a place where couples could publicly address personal and family-related disputes. She maintained that disagreements within relationships do not always require the attention or involvement of the public.
Oputa also said she hopes to have a partner who understands the importance of handling certain relationship challenges privately. According to her, effective communication, counselling and guidance from trusted professionals can sometimes provide more appropriate ways of dealing with disagreements.
She further cautioned against assuming that social media users genuinely care about the people whose personal struggles they follow online. She noted that members of the public may watch the drama unfold, take sides, create memes and eventually move on to another trending topic.
She wrote, “This is probably an unpopular opinion, but why do people bring their personal relationship fights to social media? Like… when did social media become the family court?
“I pray that I end up with a partner who has the wisdom and emotional maturity to understand that not every disagreement needs an audience. Some things should be handled within the family, privately, with honest communication, and if necessary, with counselling or a trusted professional.
“Because the truth is, social media doesn’t love you the way you think it does. People will watch, pick sides, screenshot, make memes, laugh, argue in the comments… and then scroll to the next thing.”
The former BBNaija housemate later clarified that her remarks were not directed at any particular couple or ongoing relationship controversy.
She explained that the post was intended as a general observation about how people handle private disagreements in the age of social media.
“My comment wasn’t targeted at any specific couple. It’s a generalised statement. Before una twist me inside o biko o”, she added.
