Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, after a passenger boat was hijacked along the Nigeria–Cameroon maritime corridor.

The rescue was confirmed in a statement issued by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 13 Brigade, Major Yemi Sokoya, who said soldiers deployed at Ikang responded promptly after receiving a distress alert and immediately went after the assailants.

The incident was said to have occurred on Saturday when suspected sea pirates attacked a boat en route between Cameroon and Nigeria near the Kombo Fishing Port in Cameroonian waters.

According to the statement, the attackers approached the vessel using two speedboats and a wooden craft, forcibly taking the passengers before attempting to flee.

However, during a pursuit by troops, an exchange of gunfire reportedly caused one of the pirates’ speedboats to capsize, forcing the assailants to abandon their captives and escape into adjoining creeks.

It was further stated that all 18 passengers were recovered safely and without injuries.

Reacting to the operation, the Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General P. O. Alimikhena, described the mission as evidence of the bravery and professionalism of the troops involved.

“This successful rescue operation demonstrates the courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment of our men and women to protect lives and ensure the safety of our waterways,” he said.

“We will continue to dominate our operational environment and safeguard our citizens against all criminal elements.”

Brigadier General Alimikhena also appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies by sharing timely and credible intelligence to help curb criminal activities across Cross River State.
