The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has accused Governor Seyi Makinde of weakening the local government system in the state.
Alli made the allegation in a statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity of his campaign organisation, Bisi Oladele.
The senator, who represents Oyo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, alleged that the Makinde administration had undermined the effective functioning of local governments, which he described as an important channel for delivering development at the grassroots.
According to him, the governor’s alleged lack of confidence in the local government system was responsible for what he described as its poor performance across the state.
Alli further linked the issue to Makinde’s political ambitions, noting that the governor is seeking the presidential ticket of the Allied Peoples Movement for the 2027 general elections.
He said one of the major shortcomings of the administration was its alleged failure to strengthen local governments during Makinde’s tenure.
In his words, “Nigerians are not naive to surrender the presidency to a man notorious for paralyzing local governments, which are effective channels of grassroots development.
“APM’s Makinde is averse to the third tier of government in Nigeria, and this is evident in his seven-year anti-local government administration in Oyo State.”
The allegations form part of Alli’s criticism of the Oyo State administration as political parties prepare for the 2027 general elections.
