Former adult film actress Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, widely known by her stage name Amaranta Hank, has been sworn in as a senator in Colombia following her victory in the country’s March parliamentary elections.
Omaña will represent the Norte de Santander region as a member of the left-wing Historic Pact coalition during the 2026–2030 legislative term. She secured the position after placing 23rd on the coalition’s closed electoral list.
According to Vanguard, the Historic Pact emerged as the strongest political force in the Senate election, securing more than 4.4 million votes. The figure represented 22.72 per cent of the total votes cast and gave the coalition 25 seats.
Amaranta Hank senator role draws attention
Omaña’s entry into the Senate has attracted widespread attention because of her previous career in the adult entertainment industry. Before that period of her life, she also worked as a journalist.
The newly sworn-in senator has maintained that her past should not prevent her from holding public office or contributing to national development.
Responding to criticism after her election, Omaña questioned why a woman who had worked in the adult industry should be denied the opportunity to seek elected office.
“Why can’t a woman who was in the adult industry aspire to a popularly elected office?” she asked in a TikTok video.
She has also called for stronger legal recognition and protection for people working in the adult entertainment industry. Omaña argued that women involved in the sexual economy contribute to Colombia’s economy and should not face discrimination because of their work history.
Senator outlines legislative priorities
Beyond advocating for adult entertainment workers, Omaña said her legislative agenda would focus on mental health and the prevention of sexual abuse.
Her supporters say her election reflects changing attitudes towards who can participate in public service. Critics, however, continue to question whether her previous career is compatible with the responsibilities of political office.
Omaña has rejected such arguments, insisting that competence, ideas and commitment to public service should matter more than a person’s past.
Her rise to the Senate also follows an earlier controversial appointment within Colombia’s Ministry of Equality. Omaña and fellow former adult performer Juan Carlos Florián were appointed deputy ministers under President Gustavo Petro’s administration.
The appointments generated significant debate in Colombia and placed both figures under intense public scrutiny.
Historic Pact strengthens Senate presence
Omaña’s victory forms part of the broader electoral success recorded by the Historic Pact coalition. The left-wing alliance secured the largest share of votes in the Senate contest and strengthened its influence in the national legislature.
Her swearing-in has become one of the most discussed outcomes of the election, renewing conversations about personal history, political representation and the qualifications expected of elected officials.
As the Amaranta Hank senator tenure begins, attention will now turn to whether she can translate her advocacy into legislation and establish herself beyond the controversy surrounding her past.
