Police have confirmed the arrest of a man following the discovery of a woman’s body buried in a shallow grave behind her home in the Ngege area, Kenya.
The deceased, identified as Evaline Odongo, was found wrapped in a sack and buried at the rear of her homestead on Monday, September 28, after residents alerted police to a suspected murder.
Police Commander, Edward Imbwaga, said officers were called to the scene at about 1pm following a tip-off from members of the public.
“We received a report from the public of a suspected murder from residents on Monday 28 at about 1 pm. We made a disturbing discovery of a dead woman wrapped in a sack and buried behind her house,” Commander Imbwaga said.
The discovery came after villagers reportedly noticed freshly disturbed soil behind the house. Their suspicions led them to inspect the area, where they uncovered what appeared to be a shallow grave and notified the authorities.
Police exhumed the body and transferred it to the Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it will remain pending preservation and a post-mortem examination.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Evaline was last seen with her husband, Eric Omondi Odongo, on Friday, September 25, at around 4pm. The couple are also reported to have had a domestic dispute that day.
Investigators examining the house reportedly found bloodstains on the interior walls, raising questions about what may have happened before the body was allegedly moved outside and buried.
The woman was also found with injuries, including a deep cut on her right cheek. Police are investigating whether the injury was caused by a sharp object, while the post-mortem examination is expected to determine the definitive cause of death.
Her husband, Eric Omondi Odongo, has been arrested and remains in police custody as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
“We have since commenced investigations and the main suspect is in our custody to help with the investigation,” police confirmed.
The couple had reportedly been living together for about one month before the incident. Police investigations are ongoing.
