Afghanistan earthquake death toll surpasses 2,000

Published

Powerful earthquakes in Afghanistan have killed more than 2,000 people and injured more than 9,000, the Taliban administration said on Sunday, in the deadliest tremors in years in the quake-prone mountainous country.

The quakes hit 35 km northwest of the city of Herat, with one measuring 6.3 magnitude, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The death toll has been rising steadily since the quakes struck on Saturday, as rescuers search for survivors and bodies.

On Sunday morning, a Red Crescent spokesperson put the death toll at 500, but by the evening, the Taliban administration said it had surpassed 2,000.

The quakes caused widespread damage in the area, destroying homes and businesses. Many people are now living in makeshift shelters, and there is a shortage of food, water, and medical supplies.

The Taliban administration has appealed for international assistance, and several countries and organizations have pledged to help. The United Nations is also coordinating a humanitarian response.
