Nollywood actor, Lanre Adediwura, has revealed that he faced severe financial hardship after leaving MultiChoice’s television drama Wura, stating that YouTube productions eventually helped him regain stability.
Speaking during an interview on TVC Entertainment, the actor explained why he refused an opportunity to return to the series.
According to him, despite the popularity of the role, the project did not provide the financial rewards he had anticipated.
“I came out of ‘Wura’, and I was spending more than I made. I came out poorer. For six months after ‘Wura’, I could have practically gone to a neighbour for Garri. It was YouTube that got me the stability,” he said.
Adediwura noted that although the role brought him visibility and recognition, several promises made during negotiations were not fulfilled. He also disclosed that his commitment to the production stopped him from taking on other acting opportunities that could have boosted his career.
“The role gave me everything I wanted, yes, maybe the production itself did not give me what I wanted because everything promised was not fulfilled. This is the first time anyone has heard this from me.
“The role deprived me of other things I could have done. When I was negotiating, they told me I should not worry about going to other productions. Throughout the 11 months of shooting, I could not go out for any production,” he stated.
The actor further cited House of Gaa as one of the projects he missed while working on Wura.
He explained that he had already contributed to the production by translating the script from English to Yorùbá and was also expected to play the role of Aláàfin Abiodun.
“The worst of them is ‘House of Gaa’. BAP reached out and I did the translation for House of Gaa from English to Yorùbá. I was supposed to play Aláàfin Abiodun,” he added.
Reacting to concerns that his comments could spark legal issues, Adediwura dismissed the possibility, insisting that he introduced creative expressions to the show that are still associated with it.
“There can be no issues. I have nuances I created on the show that are still being used. ‘Friends for life’ cannot be found elsewhere,” he said.
