The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has announced the identification of two suspected Ebola cases in Nigeria’s North-East region.
According to Channels Television, the agency disclosed the development on Saturday, October 31, 2026, confirming that both individuals had been placed in isolation while laboratory investigations continued.
The NCDC explained that efforts were underway to identify and monitor people who might have come into contact with the suspected patients.
NCDC awaits laboratory confirmation
In a public health update, the agency emphasised that the cases had not been confirmed as Ebola infections.
“Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results,” it stated.
The agency explained that contact identification and listing were ongoing as health officials worked to establish the possible exposure history of the individuals.
However, it did not disclose the states where the suspected cases were identified or provide information about their ages and travel histories.
The NCDC also did not announce when the laboratory results would become available.
Nigeria strengthens Ebola surveillance
The development follows Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case in Abuja on October 20.
The patient, a woman who had travelled from Uganda, was subsequently evacuated to Switzerland alongside her husband on October 26.
Health authorities have since intensified disease surveillance, contact tracing and laboratory testing.
The two newly identified cases remain under investigation and should not be counted as confirmed infections unless laboratory results establish that they have Ebola.
NCDC urges Nigerians to observe preventive measures
The agency advised members of the public to maintain good hand hygiene and improve sanitation practices.
It also urged Nigerians to follow guidance issued by public health authorities.
“Further updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available,” the agency said.
The NCDC reassured the public that investigations were continuing and that additional information would be released when available.
