Guaranty Trust Holding Company has announced the integration of Google Pay into its banking and payment services, allowing eligible GTBank customers to make online purchases locally and internationally.

According to The PUNCH, the development follows the launch of Google Pay in Nigeria, with two GTCO subsidiaries introducing the payment option.

The integration allows GTBank customers to add eligible debit cards to Google Wallet and make purchases without repeatedly entering their card details.

Businesses using Squad, the payment platform operated by GTCO subsidiary HabariPay, can also accept Google Pay at checkout.

GTBank introduces Google Pay for customers

Under the new arrangement, customers can add their supported debit cards to Google Wallet through an Android application or Google Account.

During an online transaction, customers can select Google Pay and confirm their payment without entering card numbers, expiry dates or security codes again.

The technology uses digital tokens instead of exposing customers’ actual card information to merchants.

GTCO explained that the service could be used on websites and applications accepting Google Pay.

These include platforms offering travel bookings, subscriptions, food delivery and other digital services.

However, access remains subject to card eligibility and the merchant’s supported payment options.

Squad merchants gain Google Pay option

The financial services group also introduced Google Pay to the Squad checkout platform.

The option now appears alongside other payment methods, including bank transfers, cards and USSD transactions.

Merchants can accept payments through Google Pay without building a separate integration.

Businesses approved for international payments can also receive payments from supported users outside Nigeria.

GTCO Group Chief Executive Officer Segun Agbaje said the initiative would reduce difficulties associated with online transactions.

“Most failed online payments are not refused; they are abandoned,” he said.

Agbaje maintained that providing simpler payment options could help businesses retain customers and complete more transactions.

HabariPay Managing Director Eduofon Japhet also welcomed the development.

She explained that reducing the number of steps involved in online purchases could improve customers’ shopping experiences.

According to her, businesses using Squad can access the new option through their existing checkout systems.

The launch expands digital payment options available to eligible Nigerians and online merchants.
