The apology follows a controversy that reportedly led Chinese companies to terminate commercial partnerships with the French international.

“Real Madrid wishes to express its apologies to the Chinese people for any offence that may have been caused,” the club stated.

The Spanish side also expressed appreciation for its supporters in China, describing the country as an important part of its international fan base.

The club said it remained committed to peaceful coexistence, cultural understanding and maintaining positive relationships with supporters worldwide.

Mbappé faces sponsorship backlash in China

The controversy began after Mbappé commented on a social media meme involving Mao Zedong during a podcast appearance.

His remarks triggered criticism in China, where Mao remains a politically significant historical figure.

Several Chinese brands, including Mengniu, Milkground and Eastroc Beverage, reportedly ended their partnerships with the player.

Chinese state television also suspended broadcasts of Spanish La Liga matches, while advertisements featuring Mbappé were withdrawn.

The France captain subsequently apologised, acknowledging that his comments had hurt people in China and Chinese communities internationally.

Madrid seeks to restore relations with Chinese fans

Real Madrid’s latest statement follows Mbappé’s personal apology and La Liga’s efforts to address the controversy.

The club stressed that it wanted to preserve its longstanding relationship with Chinese supporters.

However, the apology does not automatically mean suspended broadcasts or terminated sponsorship agreements will be restored.

The development highlights the commercial consequences of public controversies involving internationally recognised football personalities.
