One construction worker has been confirmed dead and three others critically injured after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Lagos State.
The incident happened in the early hours of Friday along Akinola Street, near Fadeyi Bus Stop, off the busy Ikorodu Road axis.
According to local sources, the victims were part of a crew that chose to sleep overnight at the site to prepare for an early start on the next day’s work.
Reports said disaster struck in the middle of the night when the entire structure suddenly caved in, trapping the workers beneath the rubble.
Emergency responders, led by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency alongside auxiliary safety teams, arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to begin search and rescue operations.
First responders managed to pull three survivors from the debris with varying degrees of injury, while one body was recovered from the ruins.
The survivors have been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, while emergency crews continue to clear the site to ensure no additional victims remain trapped.
Details surrounding the cause of the collapse remained sketchy as of press time.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said the cause of the collapse could not be ascertained at the moment.
“Emergency responders are making frantic efforts to ascertain the number of people (onsite workers) trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
“Coordinated search and rescue ongoing with the agency’s excavator.
“Meanwhile, at 3:33am, three adult males rescued alive, while one adult male recovered dead. Operations ongoing,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
