A foreign national has been beaten to death by a mob of approximately 50 people in Durban, South Africa, amid growing tensions over immigration.

According to AFP, police confirmed that the attack occurred on Thursday during a demonstration in the city centre.

The victim, believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s, was standing beside a road when two men approached him.

Authorities said the confrontation escalated as other members of the crowd joined the assault.

Durban has experienced repeated demonstrations against foreign nationals, with some protests escalating into violence and property destruction.

Two weeks before the latest incident, security forces deployed soldiers to the city following violent demonstrations targeting migrant communities.

The unrest reportedly lasted two days, during which businesses were looted and 14 vehicles were set ablaze.

Police have also linked recent demonstrations to rising tensions surrounding immigration and employment opportunities.

On Wednesday, e-hailing drivers participated in a demonstration involving the March and March movement, which has organised protests against undocumented immigrants.

The latest killing comes amid growing concerns over the safety of foreign nationals living in South Africa.
