Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho has extended his remarkable scoring streak to 11 consecutive Turkish league matches after finding the net for Bursaspor against Pendikspor.
According to The PUNCH, Iheanacho scored in the 62nd minute during Monday’s encounter at the Ataturk Spor Kompleksi Matli Stadium.
The Nigerian doubled his team’s lead after Halil Akbunar had opened the scoring in the 10th minute.
Iheanacho breaks Turkish football record
The latest goal extended a record-setting run that has attracted attention across Turkish football.
Iheanacho had previously become the first player to score in 10 consecutive professional league matches in Turkey.
The achievement surpassed previous nine-match scoring records associated with Galatasaray legend Metin Oktay and former Turkish international Saffet Sancakli.
Oktay achieved his scoring run during the 1962/63 season, while Sancakli reached the same mark during the 1995/96 campaign.
Iheanacho’s latest goal extended his record to 11 straight league appearances.
Bursaspor coach praises Iheanacho
Before the encounter, Bursaspor manager Mustafa Er praised the Nigerian striker for his performances.
“It’s a very difficult record to break. Our wish is for him to extend this streak even further,” the coach said.
Er credited Iheanacho’s consistency to hard work, team chemistry and the support he receives from his teammates.
He also praised the club’s management for recruiting a player with Premier League experience.
The coach maintained that the achievement should not be viewed as an individual success alone.
Iheanacho strengthens Bursaspor promotion push
The former Manchester City and Leicester City striker joined Bursaspor from Scottish club Celtic.
Since arriving in Turkey, he has established himself as an important member of the squad.
His goals have strengthened the club’s pursuit of promotion to the Turkish Super Lig.
The latest strike came four days after he scored twice and provided an assist in Bursaspor’s 3-0 victory over Muglaspor.
Iheanacho will now be hoping to extend his scoring record further as the club continues its promotion campaign.
