Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and British broadcaster Piers Morgan have exchanged heated remarks on social media over the defence of Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

According to Vanguard, the disagreement began after Carragher criticised Morgan and former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand for allowing their personal relationships with Ronaldo to influence their analysis.

Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Carragher argued that football pundits should remain objective when discussing players, regardless of their personal connections.

He accused Morgan and Ferdinand of defending Ronaldo’s actions even when criticism was justified.

“You can know someone and try to look after them, but you cannot defend the indefensible,” Carragher said.

Morgan responded on X, questioning Carragher’s previous support for former Liverpool striker Luis Suárez during the racism controversy involving Patrice Evra.

The broadcaster accused Carragher of displaying the same loyalty he had criticised in others.

Carragher subsequently acknowledged that Liverpool players had been wrong to support Suárez during the incident.

“We as a team did support our teammate and we were wrong,” he replied.

The former defender added that he had publicly apologised to Evra years earlier.

However, Carragher maintained that Morgan’s friendship with Ronaldo affected his judgment when commenting on the Portuguese forward.

He also shared an old newspaper article in which Morgan had criticised Ronaldo in 2008, questioning the broadcaster’s consistency.

The exchange attracted attention because both men regularly express strong opinions about prominent footballers and major developments in the sport.

Neither commentator indicated that the disagreement had been resolved.
