A journalist has been shot dead in southern Mexico, becoming the ninth media worker reportedly killed in the country in 2026.

According to human rights organisation Article 19, Hamurabi Huesca Manzano was killed on Friday in Oaxaca State.

The journalist operated Pinotepa Comunica, a local news website covering politics and community developments in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional.

His platform had attracted more than 52,000 followers.

Authorities said Huesca Manzano died after armed attackers opened fire on him and two other men.

The circumstances surrounding the attack are under investigation.

Rights group demands investigation into journalist’s death

Article 19 called on investigators to examine whether the killing was connected to the victim’s journalistic activities.

“We demand that the prosecutor’s office treat his journalistic work as a priority in its investigation,” the organisation stated.

Huesca Manzano also worked as a taxi driver alongside his journalism activities.

The rights organisation expressed concern about continuing attacks against media professionals in Mexico.

Reporters Without Borders has documented more than 150 killings of media workers in Mexico since 1994.

The organisation considers Mexico one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists because of threats associated with organised crime, corruption and violence.

The latest killing has renewed concerns about the safety of journalists operating in communities where reporting on local affairs can attract serious risks.

Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the attack.

No arrests were confirmed in the report.

Article 19 urged investigators to pursue all possible leads and ensure accountability for those responsible.
