Sudan has criticised the United States for failing to issue a visa to army chief Abdel-Fattah Burhan to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
According to Associated Press, Foreign Minister Mohieldin Salim Ahmed Ibrahim raised the issue during his address to the UN General Assembly.
“The host country prevented this by failing to issue the appropriate visa for His Excellency to participate in the high-level segment,” Ibrahim said.
Sudan demands end to foreign intervention
The United States reportedly withheld Burhan’s visa amid disagreement over a proposed ceasefire in Sudan’s ongoing conflict.
The war between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has continued since April 2023.
Ibrahim also called for an end to foreign weapons, ammunition and fighters entering the country.
“The just solution in Sudan, which ensures that the conflict does not reignite, requires halting the continuous foreign interventions,” he said.
He added: “Their disarmament is necessary, and weapons should remain exclusively under the control of the state.”
War displaces millions
A UN-backed investigation has found that foreign support networks supplied fighters, weapons and military technology that helped sustain the war.
The conflict has displaced millions and created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
Sudan’s government continues to accuse outside actors of prolonging the fighting, while international mediators push for a ceasefire.
