Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has drawn praise for her performance as Iya Segi in “The Secrets of Baba Segi’s Wives.” Notably, the film premiered at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.
According to TheCable, the film, directed by Daniel Oriahi and adapted from Lola Shoneyin’s 2010 novel, premiered at TIFF on September 11. Ojo’s portrayal of Baba Segi’s first wife emerged as one of its standout performances.
The film follows Chief Alao, popularly known as Baba Segi, played by Odunlade Adekola. It also explores the complicated relationships within his polygamous household.
His wives include Iya Segi, played by Iyabo Ojo; Iya Femi, portrayed by Bimbo Ademoye; and Iya Tope, played by Mercy Aigbe. In addition, Bolanle, the younger and university-educated fourth wife, is portrayed by Omowunmi Dada.
Iyabo Ojo praised for nuanced performance
Ojo’s interpretation of Iya Segi was described as layered and restrained. She avoided what could easily have become a stereotypical portrayal of a domineering first wife.
The review noted that she brought “nuance and depth” to the character. She showed both the authority Iya Segi holds within the household and the vulnerability that comes with her position.
Her character initially attempts to alienate Bolanle and turn the other wives against her. Meanwhile, she also tries to weaken the newcomer’s standing with Baba Segi.
Despite this, Iya Segi is not portrayed simply as a villain. In fact, the character also displays moments of humility and courage when defending the other women.
Ojo undergoes major transformation
The actress also underwent a noticeable physical and stylistic transformation for the role. This presented a markedly different image from the glamorous persona associated with her public appearances and reality television outings.
The film’s wardrobe and character styling were praised for helping Ojo disappear into the role of Iya Segi.
Bimbo Ademoye, Mercy Aigbe and Omowunmi Dada were also credited for delivering strong performances. The Yoruba-language production helped the cast maintain a natural style throughout the film.
The production marks Oriahi’s return to TIFF nearly 10 years after his film “Taxi Driver: Oko Ashewo”. Notably, that film featured in the festival’s 2016 Spotlight on Lagos programme.
“The Secrets of Baba Segi’s Wives” is expected to arrive in cinemas in December.
