Netflix has edited a controversial comment made by CM Punk about Sami Zayn during last week’s edition of WWE SmackDown.
During a pre-match promo, Punk took a shot at Zayn by making fun of the injury to his hand as well as his short-lived reign as WWE Champion.
The former World Heavyweight Champion described Zayn as “a guy who broke his hand jerking it to his nine-day fluke title win,” referring to Zayn’s nine-day stint with the WWE Championship. Punk ultimately ended that reign after defeating Zayn.
Although the remark was broadcast without any apparent censorship during the original airing of SmackDown, fans watching the episode on Netflix noticed that the streaming version had been altered. In the Netflix release, Punk’s use of the phrase “jerking it” is bleeped out.
Fightful Select has reported that Punk’s “jerking it” comment did not appear on WWE’s internal rundown for the broadcast.
Zayn later received an opportunity to respond to Punk in the ring when the two squared off in the main event for the Undisputed WWE Championship in Mexico City.
The championship contest was complicated by interference from outside the match. Kevin Owens entered the fray during the closing stages and accidentally hit Punk with the title belt while trying to strike Zayn.
With Punk stunned, Zayn capitalized on the opening by delivering a low blow to Owens’ former friend before connecting with the Helluva Kick. He then secured the three-count over Punk to win the Undisputed WWE Championship for the second time.
Zayn’s victory ended Punk’s championship reign and returned him to the top of WWE’s title scene.
