Hulu has cancelled Mindy Kaling’s workplace comedy “Not Suitable for Work” after just one season, bringing an early end to the series on the streaming platform.
According to Variety Australia, Hulu will not proceed with a second season of the comedy, which premiered in June and completed a nine-episode first run.
Series could find another home
The cancellation may not necessarily mark the end of the show.
Warner Bros. Television, which produces the series, plans to offer it to other platforms in the hope of securing a new home.
Kaling created the series and executive produced it alongside showrunner Charlie Grandy and Howard Klein of 3 Arts Entertainment.
The show follows a group of ambitious young professionals attempting to balance careers, relationships and personal ambitions while living in New York’s Murray Hill neighbourhood.
Young cast led workplace comedy
Ella Hunt plays investment banker AJ, who relocates from Boston to New York for a new job and lives with her best friend Abby, portrayed by Avantika.
The principal cast also includes Will Angus, Jack Martin, Nicholas Duvernay and Jay Ellis.
Guest performers during the first season included Constance Wu, Victor Garber, Ego Nwodim, Greg Germann and Judy Gold.
Cancellation cuts Kaling project short
“Not Suitable for Work” was significant for Kaling because it represented her first sole creator credit on a television series since “The Mindy Project.”
That earlier comedy initially aired on Fox before Hulu rescued it following its cancellation, eventually giving it another three seasons.
Kaling has since been involved with successful shows including “Never Have I Ever,” “The Sex Lives of College Girls” and “Running Point.”
Whether “Not Suitable for Work” can repeat “The Mindy Project’s” experience by finding another platform will now depend on Warner Bros. Television’s efforts to shop the series elsewhere.
