Delta State Police Command have arrested a 54-year-old man for allegedly sexually abusing his three daughters over a period of seven years.
The suspect, identified as Edward Odega, was arrested after one of his daughters revealed the abuse during a school awareness program.
The Delta State Police Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest on Saturday in Asaba.
According to Edafe, the long-running abuse was discovered after the Divisional Police Officer of the Ogborikoko Division, CSP Temi Agbede Zuokumor, conducted an awareness program at a school where one of the victims spoke up about her experience.
“The Command has arrested a father who had been defiling his three daughters for the past seven years,” Edafe said.
He explained that the three children are now aged 13, 15 and 24 years old.
“The disclosure by one of them during the DPO’s school outreach led to the arrest of the father,” the police spokesperson stated.
Edafe added that the three children are currently receiving medical treatment and care.
During police interrogation, Odega confessed to committing the crimes against his daughters.
“I have three daughters, and I started sleeping with my first daughter when she was 12 years old,” Odega admitted during questioning.
He also confessed to sexually abusing the other two daughters, who are now aged 13 and 15 years old.
Edafe said the suspect is “in custody” and will be “charged to court to face full prosecution” according to the state’s laws on sexual offences.
This is not the first case of fathers sexually abusing their daughters in recent months.
In October, two fathers, Azeez Lamidi and Oyewole Adamolekun, were arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly impregnating their daughters after multiple incidents of sexual abuse.
The police have praised the DPO for conducting the school outreach that led to the discovery of this long-running abuse and the rescue of the three victims.
