Kannywood mourns as veteran actor Malam Nata’ala dies

The Hausa film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned actor Malam Nata’ala, also known as Mata Na Mato, a native of Potiskum, Yobe State.

Reports indicate that the veteran actor passed away after a prolonged illness.

Malam Nata’ala rose to prominence for his role as an almajiri-school teacher in the popular Arewa24 drama series Dadin Kowa.

Before his death, the actor had publicly appealed for assistance, revealing in social media posts that he was battling a severe health condition and in need of financial support to offset his medical bills.

In August 2025, Malam Nata’ala disclosed that he was battling cancer and made an emotional plea for prayers and financial aid.

“I am battling a serious illness… I need your prayers and cooperation, including financial help,” Nata’ala had appealed.

At the time, he revealed that every three weeks, he spent approximately ₦250,000 on injections, excluding the cost of medication and hospital accommodation.

His appeal gained widespread attention when the President of Niger, Abdourahamane Tchiani, reportedly donated ₦27 million to support his treatment.

Malam Nata’ala, born Mata Yakubu in Potiskum, Yobe State, was widely celebrated for his portrayal of humble teachers and community figures. His role in Dadin Kowa solidified his reputation as a beloved household name in Northern Nigeria.

Friends and colleagues have described him as a gifted actor known for his humility, kindness, and close relationship with his fans.

Nata’ala’s public appeal for help exposed the struggles faced by many in the industry, sparking renewed discussion about the welfare and healthcare challenges confronting actors in Kannywood.

News of his death has triggered an outpouring of grief across the Hausa film community, with many expressing deep concern over how entertainers in the region cope with serious health issues amid limited social support systems.
