The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed that the recent midnight operation at a student lodge in Ikot Ekpene was carried out by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and not by unknown gunmen as earlier reported.

The command described the reports of an abduction of 15 students and theft of valuables as misleading and capable of causing public panic.

In a statement released in Uyo on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said investigations showed that no student was kidnapped during the incident.

“The attention of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has been drawn to misleading publications in the media that armed men raided students’ lodge, abducted 15 students and carted away valuable properties in Ikot Ekpene,” she said.

“The command wishes to categorically state that the incident was not an abduction by unknown gunmen and no student was abducted from the lodge. It is imperative to set the record straight and reassure the general public that the operation in question was a lawfully conducted exercise by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Uyo Zonal Office.”

She explained that the police received a distress call around 4:30 a.m. on October 24, 2025, about an alleged armed robbery at Ikot Uboh Village, Ikot Ekpene. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival and subsequent professional challenge by our officers, it was established that the operatives at the location were from the EFCC, conducting a sanctioned operation. Some persons were arrested by the EFCC during this operation and not abducted as claimed by the media reports,” the statement added.

The command advised journalists to always verify reports with relevant authorities before publication to avoid spreading false information that could cause unnecessary fear among residents.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, praised officers for their professionalism during the incident, which helped prevent a potential clash.

He also urged other law enforcement agencies to notify and work closely with the police when carrying out operations in the state.

“The command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and visitors in Akwa Ibom State,” the statement concluded.
