Police in Katsina have arrested two suspected gunrunners and seized a cache of dangerous weapons during an early morning operation.

Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Monday that the operation followed credible intelligence and was carried out along the Ingawa–Karkarku village road around 4:35 a.m.

“The suspects, identified as 25-year-old Abdussalam Muhammed and 23-year-old Aminu Mamman, both from Baure village in Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State, were intercepted while driving a blue Volkswagen Golf with registration number RSH-528 BV,” Adejobi said.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1,063 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 ammunition, and 232 rounds of 7.62x69mm PKT ammunition carefully concealed inside the car.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the arms were being moved from Hadejia in Jigawa State to Safana in Katsina for distribution to criminal networks operating in the area.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, praised the operatives for the swift response and urged them to remain vigilant. “The Force is committed to dismantling organized criminal networks across the country,” he said, calling on Nigerians to share credible information that can help security agencies.

The police said the suspects are in custody while investigations continue to trace the source of the weapons, the intended buyers, and any wider criminal links.
