Former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress and current Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has charged the leadership of the union to remain fearless and steadfast in defending the rights of Nigerian workers, despite rising external pressures.

Oshiomhole gave the advice during a weekend visit to Labour House in Abuja, where he met with NLC President Joe Ajaero, senior officials, and secretariat staff.

Describing the visit as “a return to my roots,” the former Edo State governor exchanged greetings with long-serving staff members before addressing the challenges facing the labour movement.

“Remain fearless in defending Nigerian workers and the masses, no matter the intimidation,” Oshiomhole told the NLC leadership, while commending Ajaero for staying true to the core values of the union. He encouraged the team to remain “fearless, faithful, and focused” in carrying out their responsibilities.

Reflecting on his own tenure as NLC president, Oshiomhole warned of potential dangers that come with leading the labour movement. “Besides the attacks, harassment, and even persecution in the course of your job as NLC President, your personal liberty and security will also be targeted. I experienced several of these, if not worse, during my tenure,” he said.

He, however, expressed confidence that resilience and integrity would eventually triumph. “As long as you remain fearless, focused, and committed to the cause of Nigerian workers and the masses without compromise, you will always triumph over the forces of evil that seek to weaken and undermine the NLC and your leadership,” Oshiomhole added.

The senator also advised Ajaero to disregard distractions and interference from “outside forces” seeking to derail the union’s advocacy.

In his response, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed appreciation for Oshiomhole’s visit and his continued support for the labour movement, particularly his advocacy for workers’ welfare in the Senate. He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to protecting the rights of Nigerian workers.

“We are committed to defending the rights of Nigerian workers and the masses,” Ajaero said, describing Oshiomhole as one of the NLC’s most impactful leaders. He pledged to sustain and build on Oshiomhole’s legacy and requested his continued guidance.
